MOM BABBLE: The Messy Truth About Motherhood – Mary Katherine Blackstrom

0

I was first introduced to Mary Katherine Blackstrom last Christmas season when her blog post detailing a hilarious experience with a stranger at a gas station went viral. A friend of mine shared her video and I cried watching as I laughed with her at the embarrassing incident. Her sincerity and humor sparked my curiosity and so I followed her on Facebook. And quite frankly, who doesn’t need more belly-aching, laugh-so-hard-that-you-cry laughter in their life?

After these few months, I am still intrigued by her candor, her humility, and her ability to bring sunshine into my life. (And apparently, into the lives of many others, as well!) Recently, she began mentioning this book of hers in her videos. Unlike my first encounter with Mary Katherine (MK), I wasn’t initially compelled to buy her book. As an older woman, I doubted that I could relate to her story or her place in life as a young mother. But after watching her read the introduction on Facebook one night, I felt my heart lighten up a bit and I remembered why I became so fond of her. At that moment, I realized that I was wrong and immediately placed an order on Amazon.

First, let me start by saying that it is a beautiful book. I love the colors and the format and the layout… I cannot say enough good things about it. Holding this book is like holding a rainbow in your hands. The best part though, is that there really is a pot of gold in it’s pages, which Mary Katherine masterfully disguises as little nuggets of wisdom. I dove in head first but thought that I might need to stay close to shore for the impending moments that my seven-year-old son or two canine children would come calling. However, each chapter is only a few pages long, making it easy to take in and digest in little bits, especially for busy moms who cannot seem to afford a spare moment. MK even shares pictures of herself and her family with her readers. With each page I felt myself slip into her world. And once again, I found myself giggling at her stories and tearing up with her as she modeled transparency in sharing the most difficult parts of her life.

Mary Katherine makes you feel as though you are one of her closest companions, and after becoming acquainted with her, you will want to be one. She has a way of making people feel loved, welcomed, and at peace with themselves and their own journeys. Sitting at my kitchen table and reading her book felt like having coffee with an old friend. It was as if we were swapping life stories and reflecting on the wonderment (and, at times, the horror) of being a new mom. If you haven’t already figured it out, I am a fan.

Mom Babble is not just for new moms. If you are living and breathing on planet Earth in the twenty-first century, there is something for you in this book. (Yes, that includes you.) One of my favorite lines from her book is one that I can not only relate to as a mom, but also as a new grandparent. “But what grandparents know is the magic is already present. It’s all around us, just waiting to be enjoyed. We don’t have to force beautiful moments to happen with our babies.”

If you are still not convinced, how about another bit of wisdom from MK before I go? “You will be made stronger in the hardest of times. You will discover more about who you are with the change of every season. With every struggle, every hard day, every gray hair.”

Buy the book. Or borrow it. Just read it. You won’t regret it.

Vampires Of Nirvana : Book 1 – Never Kiss Me Goodbye by Ranay James

vampiresofnirvana

Synopsis:

Kari Ransom’s career as a journalist is on a stellar trajectory. She’s making a name for herself by exposing some heavy hitters in the political arena for serious crimes and shady dealings. But that rise to the top is cut short when she’s gruesomely murdered by a professional killer leaving very few clues behind for the authorities to follow.

Her sister Kristen knows there is something more going on under the surface, and to find the culprits, she enlists the help of homicide detective Slade Jericho. Kristen senses there is more to Slade than he’s letting on. But what could that be?

Slade has seen his share of murders in his years on the Phoenix police force. And, his gut’s telling him that Kristen is in serious danger from the same heartless killers who executed Kari. He calls in the best to help him keep Kristen alive, and when Chase McKinnon, from the extraordinary McKinnon clan, steps in to lead the security detail, things start to get really dicey.

Will Chase’s past work for or against them as that past leads them straight into the vampire collective? Will Slade and Kristen find the killers before they are both murdered for the information now in her possession?

If they can unravel this twisted web of lies, love, and deception, they will be free to give in to fate and see how perfect they are for each other even against the odds.

This paranormal romance will keep you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the good guys and wondering what’s going to happen next.

Review:

There are times when I am excited about a new book, I will jump into the story without reading a synopsis or even paying much attention to the cover. As a result, I will find myself lost regarding the storyline. I must have known Vampires of Nirvana was a vampire book, but for probably 90% of the story, it behaves like a murder investigation mixed with some conspiracy. I was literally wondering where are the vampires?? However, as you near the climax of the book, the reader learns about the behind the scenes operations of the vampire world and it opens a door for the imagination! This is not your typical vampire story, and highly recommend this book as well as the series.

Ranay’s writing could be classified as art and I really cannot figure out why she hasn’t reached superstar status in the industry. She has a special way of molding her characters so you can feel their heartaches, passion, and emotion. As an added bonus, I have recently learned that all of her books have a tie to each other in a similar fashion to Disney’s Easter eggs. It has been fun trying to figure them out.

Vampires of Nirvana is currently $2.99 on Amazon and is well worth the money! Buy it here.

Happy Reading!!!

About the Author:

ranayjames

Ranay James moved to a small farm in East Texas along with her husband and two dogs after walking away from the fast paced corporate life in 2012.

Ranay graduated from college majoring in accounting and finance with a minor in business management and law. This is very concrete subject matter as a major. Becoming a romance writer seems a most unlikely path for a woman who spent most of her career managing people and operational practices within the corporate environment.

It all began in 2004 on New Year’s Day. Having made a list of things that she wanted to accomplish for the year, she added some items to that list that would push her skill set, and take her out of her comfort zone. Writing a novel was one item that she felt would stretch her abilities the most having no prior training in creative writing. Later that day, Ranay sat down at her computer. Looking at that blank word document, she simply wrote the first thing that came into her mind.

“What were you thinking?” she wrote having remembered the line from a dream she had in a hotel room in Houston, Texas in 2002. Several chapters in, Ranay found her voice as the story began to form. It poured out from a place that she never knew existed. Ranay began to write that day in 2004, and simply never stopped.

The bulk of her work is fiction. A few works are self-help and business aides. (She comes from a corporate background, and she is still a businesswoman, so it does creep in from time-to-time).

Ten years later with eight published works to her name, and nine more completed awaiting publication, Ranay has found a new passion – the love of storytelling and sharing her characters with the world.

Night Keeper – April Nunn Coker

night keeper

Synopsis:

After surviving a wicked divorce and ending up alone with a baby, Josie Simons had sworn off men. Her so-called life consisted of cleaning up after animals at the city zoo and cleaning up after her toddler at home. Maybe it was the utter boredom that made her let her best friend and coworker talk her into a blind date with handsome single father, Cam Bosworth. Before she knew it, she was caught up in a relationship that was both exhilarating and frightening. Cam was everything she needed for her daughter and herself. But lately weird things had started happening at the zoo, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that she, or worse, her daughter, might be in danger. Moreover, Cam’s concern seemed more suspicious than comforting. Events at the zoo escalate as Josie’s life becomes more complicated and dangerous than she could ever have imagined.

Review:

Night Keeper draws the reader in from the very first lines. Josie Simons is a single mother who works at a zoo during the night while her parents watch her daughter. At first glance, she seems like just another “Average Jo”; however, April Coker uses this to her advantage as she helps the reader to empathize with Josie’s character. The story is set in East Texas, so I was able to draw on my own experiences with the intensity of Texas heat and the severity of  Texas storms to make myself feel more at home in the story. And much like summers in East Texas, the novel quickly heats up as Josie is introduced to a potential love interest, even though she has sworn off men. Additionally, as strange occurrences start raising suspicions at the zoo, Josie’s mundane life begins to take a new direction. Like any great mystery, the things that happen in the darkness of night will eventually be brought to light. Unlike her protagonist, April Coker’s Night Keeper is anything but ordinary.

Finding Amy by Carol Braswell

39160354

Synopsis:

When Texas Ranger, Carson Garrett is assigned to locate and place in protective custody the wife of a man suspected of illegal activities with a Columbian drug lord, it turns into more than routine. The estranged husband has put out a hit on his wife and the only person who knows where she is hiding is her twin sister, Amy Summers. It is a race against time for Carson to find Amy, convince her of the imminent danger and get her to lead him to Jamie so he can escort both women and Jamie’s four-year-old child back to Texas. Besides the obvious problems of running from a man who is trying to kill them, Carson and Amy have an instant attraction to each other and it is clouding his usual sharp judgment and causing them both to make costly mistakes.

Review:

Carol Braswell has a knack for storytelling, and there were definitely some unexpected twists that I found surprising.  I liked the storyline, it is an easy read and it was entertaining.  However, the book contains some serious grammatical/spelling errors that were difficult to swallow and even distracting at times, and I wasn’t reading with an editor’s hat on.  That being said, everyone reads with a different perspective, so I believe it is worth reading because it has an intriguing plot and it is an enjoyable read.

The Phoenix Decree by Anna Albergucci

ThePhoenixDecree for web

Synopsis:

It’s nineteenth-century England. Social decorum reigns. Devon Phoenix, Marquess of Phoxdale and first-born son of the Duke of Seton, shuns society when he is bound to his soul mate through the discovery of a buried family secret. He learns she will need his protection from those drawn to her because of her lineage. When he crosses two centuries into present day to claim her, it is not without cost. The life of Boston artist and history buff Elz Valli is about to be irreversibly altered. Coming face-to-face with Devon, she feels certain this striking, intellectual man bears more than a shocking resemblance to the man marked in the pages of her history books. Even so, she does not expect the chain of events that unfold because of one heated dance with him. With the pendulum in motion, there is no turning back as Devon’s presence in today’s world ignites raging fires both good and evil. Driven by his insane love for her, Devon will stop at nothing to have and protect Elz. But will this be enough to overcome the powers that will attach themselves to her? This book is intended for mature audiences.

Review:

I admire writers who are able to take a concept that is not so new and spin their theory in a unique way to take the reader down untrodden paths in their imaginations.  Anna Albergucci used fresh ideas that I had never seen or read before with regard to time travel and it made for a very interesting novel.  Additionally, there are subplots within the story that keep the reader guessing page after page.  I was surprised many times while reading, and the ending was unexpected and intense.  The Phoenix Decree is powerful,  profound, fierce, and even harsh at times and is definitely not for the feint of heart.

Anna does a great job of drawing the reader in and making her fictional story seem plausible and I cannot wait to read the second book in the series, Phoenix Unbound!

Start your journey with Divine Awakening!

Review:

My initial response to a modern story based on Greek Mythology was somewhat skeptical. However, after reading Divine Encounter, I was left shaking my head as to how JoAnna Grace managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat for this story line. Even though it is completely fictional, I felt the character’s emotions and their plight tugged at my heartstrings while I was reading. Divine Encounter is entertaining, intense, violent, and steamy.  I jumped in at Book 4 in the series, and the synopis instructs you to “Start your journey with Divine Awakening” and I am wishing that I had!  It’s only $.99 on Amazon right now, and based on Divine Encounter, I’m guessing it’s well worth the change to read it.  I will definitely be starting at the beginning, myself.

When asked,  JoAnna said she didn’t know  many books were in the series, “I’ll keep writing this series until I run out of stories or people run out of interest…I love them too much to limit their world.” JoAnna, I think there will be many late nights in your future!

Other Voices, Other Towns: The Traveler’s Story by Caleb Pirtle, III

Othervoicesothertowns

Synopsis:

“Other Voices, Other Towns” has, in reality, taken Caleb Pirtle III a lifetime to write. During the thirty years he has been writing about travel across this great land, he spent much of his time listening to those whose paths he crossed.
Pirtle collects people. He collects their stories. He is firmly convinced that everyone who has ever walked across the street has a great story to tell if only someone will take the time to listen.
Pirtle has recorded many of them in “Other Voices, Other Towns.” The sketches, the anecdotes, the tales they tell, the memories they have stored, their lessons of life make you feel better or make you want to cry.
Their stories are filled with disappointments and with inspiration: The blind man who tends his beehives in the Smoky Mountains and knows that someday “I’m going to where the mountains are higher and prettier and you don’t get bee stung.” The rancher who bought a whole town because it had a beer joint, and he could get a drink any time he was thirsty. The woman who built a major university on the strength of a dime. The grieving father searching for “the best little girl in the world.” The vagabond who became a great writer because he flunked grammar and could not enroll in college. The last man on the mountain, the last survivor on an island, the last woman strong enough to tame though not civilize the Okefenokee Swamp. The teacher who taught history in school by singing the lessons he had written as songs. The men who created “Lum and Abner.” The scientist digging for clues to prove a spaceship had crashed in the backyard of Aurora, Texas. The performer who rescued the abandoned remains of a crumbling theater. The actor who figured out that a theater ticket was worth a mess of greens or a gallon milk during the Great Depression. The old con artist and wildcatter who defied the odds and discovered a great oilfield. The politician who had one cause, passed it in the legislature, and went home because there were no other bills that concerned him. The fishermen who stumbled across pearls in a landlocked lake. The girl singer who rode in a small RV behind the star until she became the star. The sad journey down the trail of broken promises. And the greatest worm fiddler of them all.
For Pirtle, other voices in other towns, have all been joined together to form the traveler’s story.

Review:

Being a historical information junkie, I love filling my mind with information that cannot be found in textbooks that were written by one side or the other or that seem to be tainted by bias.  These are real stories of real people in very real places, even if they do not exist anymore.  While reading this book, you will learn fascinating things that cannot be learned except to talk directly to people who were there.  Caleb has saved the reader the trouble of years of traveling and years of interviewing and I love that these stories were documented before they were lost by the death of the witnesses.

“Other Voices, Other Towns” contains chapters that are only a few pages long, and it allows the reader to read one, put it down, chew on it a while, and then read another.  I loved this book because it allowed me to do just that!  I don’t know why, and I am not even sure I could make a precise correlation, but I found it to be somewhat reminiscent of Paul Harvey’s radio show,  The Rest of the Story.  This book is clean and easy to read and it is also extremely informative about some of the historical idiosyncrasies of our great nation.

Preview the book here.

Recently, I was able to meet Caleb in person and I found him to be the kind of person that you wish you could sit and talk to for days.  He is down to earth and you can immediately see that he is full of the history that bleeds from his fingertips.  For more information on Caleb, you can find him here:

In honor of World Poetry Day…DORMANCY

beachpic

I peacefully walk along the dawn of sleep’s languid shores. A willing participant…basking in the place where I find safety.

The dominatrix that life has become finds me and rouses me from my hiding place.

I wake and realize that more than a year has passed, ten years even, since my eyes have witnessed anything other than their watery womb.

Events have happened, seasons have passed, people have changed, and I only have snapshots from the place of in between…

The place where it is not asleep but not awake.

And the thing that haunts me, the cloud that covers, the burden I bear comes rushing in like an avalanche that overwhelms…

Overwhelms and suffocates…encasing me in a tomb of my own making.

Mere existence is unbearable…unfathomable.

What is the plan? What is the purpose?

So the cycle ensues and the death that rescues, once again, is embraced…and I am taken…taken back to the sanctuary…to the deep refuge…that place of suspended torpor…the only place where peace can be found.

The McKinnon The Beginning: Book 1

McKinnon1_Part1_Smashwords

Synopsis:

It is the year of our Lord 1493, and King Henry VII has been seated on the English throne for eight years. He did not get there by chance alone. Nor has he stayed there with ease. He has his favorites, generously rewarding those who serve him well. Sir Nic McKinnon is at the top of that list.

For his faithful devotion, Nic finds himself graciously rewarded. That reward is the hand in marriage to the seventh Duchess of Seabridge. The only issue is Nic isn’t interested in the bounty, and taking a wife is certainly not in his plans. However, he understands that seeming ungrateful to Henry for his gift or disobeying a king’s command is never wise. Nic reluctantly agrees to marry. Living with his duchess was not one of Henry’s stipulations.

To that end, Nic’s plan is to marry the young duchess, and then leave her to her own designs. That is until he finds that she is in danger, so much so that she is fleeing for her very life. Nic is sworn to protect the king’s subjects who cannot protect themselves, but more than that, no one threatens what belongs to a McKinnon. She belongs to him by the king’s decree. The question now is not whether he will marry her and leave her behind—the question is much more clear: can he keep her alive?

Review:

The setting of this book is in a day and time when men were really men and honor was sacred, and vengeance was not sacrificed for political correctness. As a result, it was easy for me to escape into the story of Nic and Morgan. I love historical fiction/time travel/romance and I was immediately drawn in when I first started reading this book. Book one is well written and on a scale of 1-10, I give the book a 9 for an excellent story line, character development, plot, and a cliffhanger at the end that leaves you clamoring for the next one in the series!!!  It is not for the faint of heart though, in addition to violence that seems to be historically accurate for the 15th century, there are some steamy scenes that will definitely leave the reader somewhat breathless, but that are not too graphic where you find yourself looking up to see if anyone is watching you blush while reading.

I have only recently discovered Ranay James’ series about the McKinnon men and I am wishing that I had known about the books for longer!  Currently, it is free on Amazon, iBooks, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble, and it is NOT one of those freebies that you will regret downloading.  There are ten books in the series, and although I haven’t read them all, the ones I have read are equal to their predecessor.
